About Cartier Watches
The House of Cartier,
a true dynasty of style, elegance and fine
craftsmanship, was founded in 1847 by Louis-Franois
Cartier, master jeweler to Europe's crowned heads.
By the early 20th century, his three grandsons, Louis,
Jacques and Pierre, were successfully managing Cartier
boutiques in Paris, London and New York.
The first true Cartier wrist watch, the Santos,
(pictured left) designed by Louis and named for Alberto
Santos-Dumont, a dashing Brazilian aviator, was
introduced in 1904. Jeweled wristwatches followed soon
after in 1906. In 1910, Louis created and patented the deployant folding clasp. 1917 saw the introduction of
the famous Cartier Tank watch. Long
regarded as the single most important and influential
watch design of the 20th century, the distinctive
timepiece was designed in tribute to the Allied Tank
commanders who helped defend France during World War I.
In 1933, Cartier was commissioned by the Pasha of
Marrakech to create a watch he could wear while
swimming. As one of the earliest truly water-resistant
designs, the watch featured an attractive round case of
solid gold.
Cartier is considered the second largest jewelry
company in the world. Cartier ranks second only Tiffany.
Tiffany and Cartier produce a wide variety of jewelry
products as well as watches. Cartier and Cartier Watches
have typically catered to royalty although watches made
by Cartier are starting to be worn by middle class
people throughout the nation. Cartier clearly is known
for very high quality jewelry. Cartier Watches are
obviously considered part of this high quality jewelry.
Cartier Watch
Watches made by Cartier were some of the most prized
jewelry items 100 years ago and still remain revered
today. Although Cartier was founded in 1847, Cartier did
not offer Cartier Watches as part of its product line
until Alfred, Cartier’s son took over the company in
1874. The company did not really start to push its
products lines of watches by Cartier until 1904. Cartier
introduced a number of watch brands over the next 4
decades substantially revolutionizing Cartier Watches
and the rest of the watch industry. Cartier introduced
the Baignoire and the Tortue watch by Cartier adding to
the number of watches by Cartier in 1912. The Cartier
Tank model followed 5 years later. Cartier Watches were
further enhanced by the Pasha in 1932. Cartier is also
very famous for enhancing all watches by Cartier
utilizing movements produced by Edward Jaeger of
Jaeger-Le Coultre. It is interesting to note that most
watches by Cartier use movements from other companies
including Movado and Audemars Piguet.
